The island of Hispaniola is shared by the Dominican Republic (2/3 of the territory) and its neighbor Haiti (1/3).
The Dominican Republic has a surface area of 48 442 km2 and a population of 12 million inhabitants.
The official language is Spanish.
Its capital is Santo Domingo.
The geography of the Dominican Republic is varied: bordered by the Atlantic Ocean in the north and the Caribbean Sea in the south, the island is a real jewel offering splendid and diversified coastal landscapes.
The interior is also very diverse and consists of tropical forests, savannahs and mountains including Pico Duarte which is the highest peak in the Caribbean.
